Laura and Travis will be discussing climate risks and opportunities for businesses and giving their analysis of the recent guidance on environmental disclosure issued by the Canadian Securities Administrators.

Climate Change: A Canadian Legal Perspective

Discover the business risks and opportunities of current and future climate regulations.
Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta are moving forward on tightening greenhouse gas emission disclosure requirements. There is, however, some uncertainty regarding the political climate change agenda. Energy policies and a variety of incentives are being developed by federal and provincial governments that pose both risks and opportunties to businesses from all sectors. The Securities Commissions in Canada and the US have issued guidance on disclosure, which have significant business implications. Companies can benefit from being proactive on reporting and disclosing emissions. Learn the business risks and opportunities of current and future climate regulations.
Participants will:
- review recently enacted Canadian energy conservation and renewable energy acts
- learn about new GHG disclosure developments and obligations under legal frameworks
- learn about Ontario Securities Commission and US Securties Exchange Commission guidance regarding environmental and climate change disclosure
- learn about industry-wide business risks and opportunities stemming from the regulatory climate and benefits of early action
- gain sector-wide recommendations on addressing risks and capitalizing on opportunities in a climate change context

Laura and Travis advise clients on a variety of legal aspects of climate change and environmental issues. With over a decade of experience, Laura worked on complex projects involving environmental transactions, litigation, drafting and negotiating emmissions trading contracts, and advising on climate change disclosure requirements and policies. Travis has comprehensive experience acquired in Canada and the US in international transactions, environmental and First Nations law, project finance and corporate restructuring.

Laura and Travis will discuss the Canadian Securities Administrators’ recent guidance on environmental reporting and ideas for companies unsure about their Greenhouse Gas risks in particular.
